Leadership plays an important role in the growth and development of any given society where by it enhances fair distribution of resources and peaceful coexistence of members of the society. Leadership has been a major challenge in many countries, organizations and families. Poor leadership has been the main cause of poverty and other problems that modern societies are currently been faced with. Therefore there is need for the world leadership to adapt policies and styles of leadership that caters for the needs of their subjects. There are various leadership styles that a leader can employ to lead his/her subjects. Democratic leadership style as well as autocratic leadership style is the two main leadership styles that are widely applied by leaders across the glob.

In countries and organizations where democratic leadership style is in use tends to perform better in comparison to those that uses autocratic leadership style. There are a number of reasons that makes democratic leadership far much better in comparison to autocratic leadership. This paper seeks to compares the advantages and disadvantages of using these two leadership styles as a leader in running an organization.

Success of any organization largely depends on the type of leadership style that is in use, democratic leadership style has been instrumental in bringing success in many organizations while autocratic leadership has been blamed for poor performance in many organizations.

Democratic leadership is type of leadership where a leader allows participation of his subjects/subordinates in the decision making process. In this type of leadership the contributions of each and every member of the organization are highly valued and acted upon to make the organization better. This leadership is also known as participative leadership due to its nature of allowing members to participate in the decision making process. On the other hand, autocratic leadership is a type of leadership where leaders do not allow for participation of their subordinates in the decision making process in the organization. Leaders using this leadership style believe that their ideas are better than those of other members of the organization and duties should be performed their way.

One of the reasons behind success in organizations that uses democratic leadership is that, this type of leadership style encourages creativity and innovation in an organization. In contrast autocratic leadership style tend to discourage creativity and innovation in an organization as it does not provide a conducive environment in which members of the organization can try their ideas. Creativity and innovation are the most important aspect of success in any given organization especially in the world of business whereby, the levels of competition are on the rise each and every day. Therefore, to be on the safer side leadership should embrace creativity and innovation in the organization by allowing all member of the organization to participate in the decision make process. Democratic leaders tend to be more flexible in comparison to their autocratic counterparts; thereby they tend to enhance creativity in an organization leading to outstanding performance of their organizations.

Teamwork is another crucial component of a success in an organization. Leaders who embraces the usage of teams in performance of various tasks in an organization usually helps an organization to achieve a lot in contrast to those who do not use teams to perform tasks in an organization. In order for teamwork to be effective as well as efficient in the achievement of the organizational goal leadership style is a key influential factor on the success of a team.

Democratic leadership, “usually tends to allow usage of teams in an organization by giving room for group members to exercise freedom to solve group problems and organizational challenges thereby contributing success in an organization.” Martindale, pg34). It is through teamwork that ideas are generated that leads to development of new products that results into organization growth. In contrast autocratic leadership discourages teamwork in an organization whereby the ideas of the group members are not give the much need weight by the leaders. Therefore, autocratic leadership tends to kill teamwork spirit in an organization resulting into poor performance in the organization.

Finally, motivation of workers in an organization is very important as it determines the levels of success in an organization. At the heart of building a highly motivated workforce is leaders. In order to ensure that one builds a highly motivated workforce its important to embrace a type of leadership style that makes the workforce feel as part of the organization rather than a separate part of the overall organization. Democratic leadership tends to build a highly motivate workforce by rewarding the efforts of the workers and embracing their ides by encouraging them to participate in the decision making process. In contrast autocratic leadership tends to build a work force which is not well motivated, this is because it does not embrace the ideas of the workers and they are not allowed at all to participate in the decision making process.

The similarity that exists between the two leadership styles is that they are both widely applied in management of business organization and they are used to achieve the same goals of enhancing unity and peaceful coexistence of various members of the organization.

Democratic leadership for sure does provide an environment in an organization that encourages growth and development thereby leading to overall success of the organization. It tends to encourage teamwork, builds a highly motivated workforce and leads to creativity and innovation in an organization. Therefore, democratic leadership creates an environment that encourages elements of organizational success to flourish in contrast to autocratic leadership that discourages growth and development in an organization.
