Professors should not Be Grated by Students
Traditionally professors grade the academic performance of their students based on the objective factors like completion of the assignments, no late submissions etc. However, the reverse procedure occurs quite recently, meaning the evaluation of the professors by the students. Such evaluation may have different impacts on both students and professors. Students may get moral satisfaction from the possibility to conduct the grading of their professors, who usually grade them, but this would not be considered as something of great importance by the students, only entertainment. Meanwhile, such type of evaluation may have a very negative impact on the professors, including both academic and personal aspects. This should not take place, and there is a number of reasons for that.
Firstly, the evaluation of the professors’ work cannot be done absolutely objectively by the students, and there might be different reasons for this. Students might lack enough knowledge about the professor’s level of expertise in the field, as well as be familiar with only certain aspects of his teaching practice. For example, a student failed the semester final, got an F for semester and would have to take the course once again, spending his time and money. There is no professor’s fault in the student’s unwillingness to study, but such study would grade professor with low marks. Another example can be a student who only went to class once or twice, and then changed the major and all the courses. Such student would not be able to fully evaluate the professor.
Secondly, students usually do not possess as much knowledge on the subject-matter as the professors do, and their judgment of the professors’ performance might be unjustified. For example, student does not understand the course and reads extra to catch up; he later claims professor lacks knowledge and cannot teach the students too much. In some other case, the student may be unfamiliar with the areas course covers, but still criticize the professor for poor knowledge of something if the question on a side topic would not be answered.
Finally, evaluating professors’ performance by the students may result in resentment of the first ones, as they are judged by people, not capable of understanding of all aspects of their work. For instance, low evaluation of the professor’s work may result in refusal to teach certain classes or overall disappointment in the evaluation system. In some other case, grading the professor by his student might cause the change of professor’s behavior in class, influencing the quality of teaching and changing the attitude to all the students.
Professors deserve the right to have the evaluation of their work done by people who received special training and are fully capable of doing this or other professors, working in the same field. Examples above prove the fact that students are more likely to be subjective than objective while conducting the evaluation. Students are proven to be lacking the adequate level of knowledge for conducting proper qualitative grading of their professors. Moreover, even the fact of students grading their professors makes the latter feel moral discomfort and social imbalance, as their hard work and efforts of becoming professors are ruined by the fact of student evaluation. Professors deserve fair treatment that would consider all of their services to the university and its students, and they should only be graded by the specially coached professionals, having impeccable reputation, clear record in the specific area of knowledge, who would be able to provide true and unbiased opinion. That is why involving people from outside the campus might become a solution of the problem.
