Throughout all epochs, some people have always led the others. Many of them, among whom are Alexander the Great, Mahatma Gandhi and even Steve Jobs, achieved remarkable results. Nowadays, psychologists together with businesspeople develop many simple strategies which allow people to learn leading skills effectively in a short period of time. These strategies are called leadership styles. Different scientists distinguish different styles.
In my opinion, one person usually possesses several leadership styles. I would like to develop more transformational leadership as it is considered to be one of the best for doing business. Transformational leaders are motivating as they expect to see the best from all people of their team including themselves. Such attitude creates high productivity and inspires people from a team to actively participate in the discussion.
The shortcoming of this style lies in the possible lack of details. That is, people do not do enough research on the problems they need to deal with. Therefore, I guess, my preference towards transactional leadership must solve this problem.
Transactional leadership style presupposes that all the team members obey their leader if they agree to do the job. The motivation for the members is the money, which the organization usually pays them. The leader can ‘punish’ the workers if they do not do their job in the right way.
On the one hand, this leadership style can sound quite controlling; nevertheless, it has many benefits. The first one is that all the roles are distinguished clearly, and everyone knows who he or she is expected to do. The second benefit is that those who are well-motivated get good rewards.
The shortcoming of this style lies in little ability to improve the job satisfaction. But for this, we can apply the transformational leadership style, so the methods we apply will appear to be quite balanced and, therefore, more effective.
I really liked charismatic style, which was widely applied by Mahatma Ghandi who with his calm persistence changed the whole India – no violence, no orders, just calm talking. Truly charismatic people are not that easy to meet, but when you do, you like this person at once. Everything about him or her feels perfect. You feel attracted.
Leadership is not really about your needs but more about the needs of the organization, people you are leading. That is why when I usually need to get something from people, I try to think not about what I like but what that person may like to hear or see.
I also consider the ability to adapt fast to various situations properly and effectively to be a great achievement of a good leader.
Good leaders seem to be always very enthusiastic about what they do. They infect everyone around them with that inspirational energy. The ability to inspire is a vital feature for an effective leader.
According to Daniel Goleman, a leader must possess a well-developed emotional intelligence so he or she can feel when the mood of the people is changing, to be compassionate and supportive, provide team members with good motivation.
In conclusion, if people develop, try to look nice, have sophisticated manners and, most important, possess the information needed in a particular field, they can become very good leaders who can achieve such heights as Winston Churchill or Adolf Hitler (only taking into consideration the leading skills).
