This shows how important the past is in molding the future.

Managers act like potters or craftsmen. Every manager has a strategy which is compared to the clay. They are in charge of businesses, seated between past capabilities and future prospects of the business. They are expected to use the knowledge in their hands as well as their brains simultaneously to achieve the main objectives. The chief idea behind craft lies between action and thought. This remains the main notion in the crafting strategy. This means that managers should think before acting, the same way they should formulate before implementing.

A potter rolls clay to make the desired sculpture. The clay and the rolling stick are made to form the desired shape. The initial idea is followed by other organized ideas, until the pattern is achieved. This way, an action drives thinking, which in turn comes out as a strategy. Similarly, a salesman takes a product to the customer to test its functionality. In case the product is not perfect, the salesman goes back to the company and changes the product appropriately. This produces a new product which opens new doors for the company through the product. The company changes its strategic course unintentionally. This proves that strategies can form automatically, or are formed by the managers.

Craftsman works constantly with the hands and the mind. This is the secret of victory in business. However, some organizations separate hands from the mind. This invites failure in the business which is hard to heal. This is evident when a salesman who notices deficiency in the product is not given a chance to implement the changes. The salesman has total understanding of the customers’ needs as he is the one who discussed with the customers directly. Daily running of the organization should be handled reasonably to ensure the crafting strategy is applied. Effective strategies show up in strange places. They are developed by unexpected persons through unexpected ways. Every stakeholder should be respected as they can be the sources of successful strategies. The past of an organization means a lot to its present as well as its future.
