Nowadays, film based on sport events as well as stars have taken the center stage into providing insightful information into the lives of people. However, they are perceived to be based on fictional characters as well as events are making it hard to associate the events to real life situations. In this case, there is a need for developing film made on real life events and plights of characters. The aforementioned need lead to the development and filming of such sports documentaries as “Hoop Dreams”. Therefore, this assignment tries to examine the different challenges as well as tribulations which young black kids face in their quest to turn professional basket-ball players.
In my opinion, the documentary has attracted so much praise as well as controversies let alone the financial box-office success. The film, which is centered among two characters, has successfully depicted the true state of the current economic as along with social situations in the United States. Such facets as politics, culture and social plights have been incorporated into the film to portray the real life scenario. It is a documentary which has been able to attract the element of revisionists since there are moments of melodramatic high points which are transformed into surprise endings. Subsequently, there is an element of upbeat-ending which is comforting to the audience (James, 1994).
Notwithstanding, the film successfully explores the exploitation which is experienced by poor, young black in their quest to play professional basket-ball. The aforesaid dishonesty are marred by the selfish adults, mainly white, as well as street agents and coaches who manipulate these young talents into their own selfish gains and ego.
Moving forward, there is a likelihood of the producers selecting Gates and Agee since their lives are a true reflection of the unpredictable sports drama amongst young black potential talents which may end up either as success or defeat. It is assumedly clear, from the film events, that these two characters were a true representation of young ‘blue chip” potential players who were likely to succeed in high school and probably win athletic scholarships (James, 1994).
Two Social Problems Affecting Gates and Agee Directly. This documentary revolves around two young black kids who possess so much potential talent needed for undertaking in the sport for which they are fond of basketball. Despite the fact that the film unfolds through a strong sporting plot, there are social issues which arise especially because of the introduction of the families of this two characters (Harrington, 1998).
The first social issue that presents itself to the viewers is abject of poverty. It is clear that these two families are living on ghetto neighborhoods which are short of basic human needs. When we are first introduced to Emma Gates and Sheila Agee, there is substantial prove to assume the form of hardships these families undergoes to bring food to the table. For instance, Sheila Agee is a single parent who is burdened by the responsibility to pay utility bills. She is supposed to come up with a total of $268 a month in order to survive. An insight into the poverty lives brings about the authenticity of the documentary, because it gives it a normal touch to understand the different plights families undergo (James, 1994).
This level of abject poverty is portrayed when Sheila Agee and her family are left to stay in the dark since she had failed to pay for electricity bill. Also, it is safe to assume that the two kids learn in a downtown school, as a result of their respective level of poverty. When the opportunity to study in a suburban school presents itself, the two characters are extremely happy because they understand that it will form a platform which they can use to attain their goals; professional basketball players. This means that in abject poverty, opportunities of turning professional basketball are limited and narrowed in that matter.
The second social problem which is presented in the documentary concerns social injustices as well as exploitations. This is well explained by the selfish interests portrayed by the ruthless white adults, street agents and mean coaches who are misusing the talented young black kids for monetary gains as well as ego. For instance, when the two: Agee and Gates are given an opportunity into St. Josephs High School, the coach decides to assimilate Gates into the team while relegating Agee into the inner city squad in Chicago. This move is dependent upon his interest to win the state championships (James, 1994).
Examination into the Solutions to Alleviate the Aforementioned Social Problems. Arthur Agee’s Mother, Sheila Agee embarks on enrolling as a student to pursue a course in nursing in order to minimize the effects of poverty. She is filled with much determination to beat all odds to pass her final exam. It is assumedly clear that she engages in informal work in order to pay for the utility bills in each and every month: she works for $268 a month in order to fulfill her responsibilities as a bread winner in the family.
In order to succeed in their quest for becoming professional basketball players, both Agee and Gates are determined to put much hard-work into sharpening their skills for the game. They both make their way into a suburban high school where they find an opportunity to play in professional league. Furthermore, it is assumedly clear to indicate that they are determined to fulfill their wishes despite the exploitations as well as humiliation. Agee is relegated to a lower division league in Chicago, when the coach decides that he was not as talented as William Gates. Gates works so hard into becoming a pro-student player whose destiny is in the National Basketball Association Leagues.
When William Gates hurt his knee, he is offered with a quality rehabilitation program. Later, he is assimilated into sponsorship program by the Encyclopedia Britannica Corporation through which he benefits from customized tutoring.
Limitations to the Solutions. William and Arthur are presented with opportunities to become professional players; however, they are still faced with different limitations to this result. For instance, in the course of sharpening his skills into becoming a professional player, William Gates hurts his knee which keeps him out of the game for a substantial period of time. The doctor tells him that his knee condition will not allow him continue to play basketball professionally (James, 1994).
Also, it is safe to indicate that despite her determined move to pursue nursing course as a way to minimize the plight, she is faced with financial problems. She is placed at an unfair position to fully proceed with her education as well as meet her family’s needs. Also, her husband leaves the family for drugs which adds challenges to her.
In this documentary film, the social issues are tackled with both zeal and determination. The affected people are left with no choice but to tackle the issues directly in order to minimize effects of poverty, exploitation and poor education.
For instance, there is the need to incorporate ghetto kids into suburban schools where they have different opportunities and qualitative education environment. It is perceived that these schools provide a reliable platform upon which they have an opportunity to play professional basketball. These fundamental issues are depicted when Agee grows to be taller and gets his desire to play basket-ball fulfilled. He becomes a professional star in a Chicago team. However, his dream is almost shattered by the inability to meet academic threshold of 700 marks out of 1600, which are needed to pass freshmen year (James, 1994).
