Reflections on Technology

In the modern world, big and better technologies have been invented. A lot more is being invented with time. As this happens, the way of life is eased, for example, the capability of communicating with people in far locations within a short time. However, technology affects ones thinking capacity and development of ideas. When it comes in, an individual gets used to easy things such as the performance of work duties by a robot. In a case where the robot fails, they will find it hard to perform the task they once could perform. In the development of young ones, writing is enough indicators of the detrimental effects digital technologies can have. As young children develop into adulthood through their careers, use of smartphones, social media, and internet searches reduces their ability to think on their own as well as the art of writing. Therefore, digital technologies have negatively impacted on a personal intellectual as evidenced in the writing skills.

When students are enrolled in learning institutions, the society expects that they will learn how to develop, present and implement transformative agenda. Additionally, that they will be respectable people owing to what they say and how they act. One way to determine if the student has learned is by their writing skills. In the book "They say I say," writing is depicted as a three-phased art. The student's intellectualism determines how they handle each of the phases. In the first phase "They say," the student is expected to borrow from a template as a way to guide their writing, learn the art of summarizing other people's work and be in a position to apply quotes in their works. Digital technologies such as the availability of information through the search engines have made students reliant on other people's information and hence a high rate of plagiarism in academic writings today. In the second phase "I say," a student is expected to give their view on the topic they are writing about. Technological advancement has robbed students the art of creativity and as such they will run to the internet and get other people's views and place them in their views. In that way, it is evident that availability of information through the advancement of technology affects student's thinking capacity making them dependent on other scholars.

The intellectual capability of a learner in academic can be assessed in how they handle the third phase of "They say I say" which is "Tying it all Together." In this section, a writer is expected to diagnose the presented ideas, think hard and bring out some results. Here, a writer is expected to tie their first sentence to the last as a way of giving a conclusion. However, technological advancements as brought by social media have robbed the students' ability to tie different parts of their arguments into one. Social media, Facebook, and Twitter, and which students are addicted to doing not give them an opportunity to analyze ideas and creatively make decisions. Instead, it gives them a false sense of being by supporting their ideas. As a result, writers are no longer able to combine ideas in their arguments and produce the "As a result" part.

Further, the crafting and presentation of good ideas by an intellectual student will only happen if their word choice is attractive to the audience and they do not repeat words. The art of academic writing is developed over time where students are taught how to use connecting words and the re-structuring of points. Technological innovations such as the use of smartphones have reduced students nurturing of skills. When they communicate, they write text messages in shorthand and at other times, they just need to record their voice and send it to the other person. As such, they do not develop writing skills. They of people end up in an environment where they cannot construct correct sentences. Due to their shorthand writing, they end up in shorthand language and which is evident in their writing. Additionally, the use of technology poses performance of tasks as an easy thing making them view writing as something that they do not need to practice. As a result, they end up stating ideas without an effort to criticize or join the ideas to give a conclusion.

In "Tying it all together," learners are expected to develop the art of using academic language and combining it with colloquial language as a way of attracting the audience. Developments in technology have rendered this impossible. Technological devices have made it possible for activist and different stakeholders to undertake social uprising, for example, on Twitter where users condemn or applaud a happening through the hashtags. Each of the users gives their views with no one to check the grammatical corrective or arrangement of ideas. As a result, learners and who are expected to write academic documents end up developing colloquial language. In academic writing, these students end up mixing colloquial and academic languages. Their papers are therefore less appealing to audiences owing to the language used.

An individual's intellectualism is exemplified in how they express their ethos. Any paper that is written should maintain the reader's interest and at the same time maintain a balance between the type of languages used in such a way that the writer's ethos is not damaged. When technology takes a toll on the writing skills by modern students, the type of writing is lowered. Readers are forced to struggle in understanding the message. At the end of it, they form a negative perception of the writer based on their choice of words and types of ideas brought forth. In the wrong run, poor intellectual capabilities are evident.

Showing intellectualism in writing is evident when a writer can show decision-making skills through their writing. It can only be possible if they fulfill the requirements of the "In Other Words" section. Normally, an intellectual will serve the other person with ideas with an aim of helping them understand. When writing, a learner should develop a meta-commentary that will elaborate and clarify ideas. In other words, it tells the reader how to take the information and what they should get from the argument presented. However, the use of social media, technological devices, and broadcast media which do not give a learner a chance to explain themselves have negatively impacted on the development of meta-commentaries. As a result, learners have a brief in writing where they perceive that their mandate is to present the points or ideas and leave them for the audience to decide what they mean or how they should be interpreted.

In a nutshell, technology in impaction on the way we live and the way we communicate. To learners who are expected to write academic papers, it has denied them a chance to be creative writers. It has made them dependent on other people's views and hence reducing their capability to bring out ideas. Their intellectualism that in this case can only be measured in their ability to write well has reduced. Therefore, though technological advancement is a way of easing life, they have negatively impacted the intellectual capabilities of learners.
