The type of transportation that will be discussed in the framework of this paper is a train. It is presumed that the expansion of the railway system, as well as the improvements of the Dubai Metro, will help to solve the urban problems currently faced by the governors of the UAE.
Trains in the UAE are rather undeveloped as they are frequently associated with the Dubai Metro only. Currently, the state is making the attempts regarding building and launching of the railway systems that will connect the Emirates and neighboring countries. Trains have been traditionally used for intercity traveling; nevertheless, considering the growth of the cities, as well as the demands of the population, trains have also been approved for use in big cities.
The advantages of trains are numerous. First of all, they are useful in satisfying the needs of the overpopulated cities in transportation. Secondly, the most innovative trains are sustainable and quite; thus, not using harm to the environment and comfort of the citizens. Trains are also safer when compared with other types of transportation, and they provide the opportunities for different activities onboard. On the other hand, trains are perceived as a kind of public transport that might not be tolerated by the citizens of such a country like the UAE. Secondly, the countrys railway system is underdeveloped; there is no culture of using the public train system. Moreover, train maintenance is associated with increased costs, lack of flexibility and doorto-door services, monopoly, booking formalities, etc.
Assessing the train industry of the UAE, one should stress that it is rather innovative. The national company Etihad Rail, which also operates flights within and outside the country and can accustom routes to the needs of clients (which is rather convenient and customer-oriented approach), provides train services. At the same time, it should be noted that whereas the Dubai Metro mainly represents trains in Dubai, the overall railway network of the country is underdeveloped so far. More than that, it is presumed that functioning of only one railway company is obviously not enough for the country with such economic and developmental perspectives as well as the demographic imbalance currently experienced in the UAE.
The Dubai Metro is one of the alternatives offered for the solution of the problem of the fast population growth and overall demand in transportation. The introduced trains were driverless and included first-class places as well as sections suitable for women with children only. In other words, this method of transportation was rather customer-oriented but not well developed. Currently, the governors of the country hold the plans to expand the Metro to six more states. As one of the implementers has stressed, the success of this project so far is likely to act as a catalyst for further Metro schemes in the kingdom. Moreover, it is specified that the UAE is currently building the 1200 kilometer railway network that is expected to connect all seven emirates as well as the state of Oman and Saudi Arabia. It is anticipated that the problem of mass transportation, as well as demand for transportation (as a result of the implementation of these projects) will decrease partially. Furthermore, as Cornwell admitted, Bahrain, which will have the smallest rail network of the six Arab Gulf states, is still committing to connecting to Saudi Arabia along the existing King Fahd Causeway by 2018. A similar system of public transportation is adopted in Japan where there is a developed network of city trains, especially in Tokyo. Perhaps, the governors of the state should consider the experience of the Japanese partners in this direction. The plans are also set for modernization of the Metro. As Vooght mentions, In addition to the link between the two UAE cities, plans are being discussed for a 50-minute Hyperloop link to be built between Dubai and Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
The transportation type that has been chosen for this assignment is a train because this is my favorite kind of transport, which I frequently use in case there is a need of traveling to another site. There are many improvement projects related to trains, including the overall increase of the speed, raising of the comfort level offered to the clients, lowering of the prices charged for journeys, etc. In my opinion, all of these expected changes will affect the supply-demand curve and contribute to the optimization of the passengers movement.
The system of public transportation in the UAE is rather diverse and, thus, it offers a number of options for the residents and travelers. However, trains remain to be a preferable mode of transportation due to their reliability and overall convenience. More than that, I am assured that the population of the Earth should become more sustainability-oriented and choose eco-friendly modes of transportation, which produce less waste. Therefore, I am also considering biking and car sharing as alternatives to city trains.
There have been many reasons why I have chosen particularly this type of transportation. First of all, I prefer them due to the healthy conditions. I frequently feel sick while traveling with the help of cars or buses. Thus, trains are the best option for me. Moreover, despite the moderate development of train transportation system, I prefer this type as it helps to reach the certain destination with pleasure. During the journey, one can read without the fear of vomiting as well as to perform the job tasks if needed. Of course, there are varieties of buses that have developed similar office conditions; yet, trains remain to be more convenient in the dimension. Apart from that, they are considered to be one of the safest transportation types mainly due to the tough schedule and routes. Moreover, train traffic is more regulated and controlled when compared with other types of movement. Eventually, trains help to decrease traffic on roads and streets reducing pollution and making cities more appropriate for living.
The proposed improvements concerning public transportation system in the UAE are considered to be rather helpful in addressing the problem of population and overall underdevelopment of the railway network. Trains, especially city ones, have many advantages and few drawbacks that could be easily removed in case there is the will of the decision makers. The improvements in the railway network will change my lifestyle as I will have more options in regard to the transportation type. Therefore, I will definitely choose trains if possible as they resonate with my vision of urban development.
